Gary Lueders and the 24 hours of Booty fundraising ride.

Gary Lueders is our past president and has been involved in the Desert Bicycle Club for many years. He has done many great things for our club, but he is also active in cancer awareness and fundraising.

In 2001, Gary and his son Spencer decided to get involved in the Lance Armstrong Foundation and raise money so they could go to the Ride for the Roses in Austin.  Spencer is an avid cyclist and racer (cat2). That year, they rode the entire Blue Ridge Parkway as their fundraiser event and went to Austin.  But that tied up just about a week so the next year, Spencer decided to ride the Booty Loop in Charlotte for 24 hours (solo) to raise awareness about cancer and raise money.

Gary was supporting Spencer by providing food, riding some with him, and informing people about what was going on. They had set up camp and had banners in front of Queens College on the Booty Loop.  The media showed up and they got a good bit of publicity.  From that, the rest is history. You can read more about this remarkable event on their web site at http://www.24hoursofbooty.com

In 2007 this 24 hour road cycling event raised $737,000 for cancer research and programs.

On Your Honor ....

This is a reminder that we get a terrific discount on our coffee/beverages and bagel at the Bagel Bistro, but that the cost is:
  • $1.00 for a coffee or soda
  • $1.00 for a bagel (when out for our consumption Saturdays)
  • $2.00 for both
Put your money in the cup or jar provided. Please pay your proper share out of respect for the courtesy extended to us by Judy, the owner, and share a "Thank You" with her, or add a tip for the workers if you are so moved.

In Memoriam

Darren York 1963-2006
Darren passed away July 23, 2006 while mountain biking the trails above Hurkey Creek. He was a true adventurer who worked hard, played hard and instilled his competitive spirit in his daughters, Danae and Deidre.

Winning is hard – that’s why there is only one winner.” Darren

A carved log memorial bench has been placed at Hurkey Creek Park, near the trails.  The inscription reads:
In Loving Memory of Darren York
              July 23, 2006
          "ENJOY THE RIDE"

Meimei Chang 1947-2003 -- cancer

Bob Gaddini 1956-2003
Bob was killed December 15, 2003 when he was struck by a car while on a bike ride through Rancho Mirage. The driver of the automobile left the scene and has never been apprehended.

As a tribute to Bob, we remember his affectionate greeting of "Bro" by placing it on the left collar of our jerseys. We proudly wear this as a memorial to an elite rider, a great and loyal friend, and a man In Memory of Bob Gaddiniwhose entire life is an inspiration to all who knew him.

"Thanks for the pull, Bro ..."

I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing. 2 Timothy 4:7-8
