Summer Trip

Bicycling for me is more than participating in a club ride. While I enjoy the competition of the Saturday ride, there are other things I like to do on a bike.

I was fortunate to have been asked to chaperone the Historic Youth Tours ride in Montana this summer. The HYT is a non-profit group created by Craig Johnston, club VP and history buff, whose purpose is to expose youth to history through bicycling.

We trained the 12, 13, and 14-year-old middle school kids about 5 hrs per week for several months. Their dedication to training paid off when they climbed the Lost Trail Pass, a 7 mi. 6% grade. The kids played in the snow at the top of the pass. What a change from the 120 degrees it was at home! What a break for us all, enjoying cooler, greener places....
